Tarim University, abbreviated as "Tada", was founded in October 1958, and was named "Tarim River Agricultural University" at that time. In 1960, with the support of Wang Zhen, who was then the Minister of the Ministry of agriculture and reclamation, he expanded the scale of running the University and renamed it "Tarim University of agriculture and reclamation". Wang Zhen was the honorary president of the University. In the autumn of 1977, the college entrance examination was resumed, and Tarim University was directly under the Ministry of agriculture. In 2003, it was granted the right to confer a master's degree. In May 2004, with the approval of the Ministry of education, it was renamed "Tarim University", which was jointly built by the central government and Xinjiang production and Construction Corps.
