Based on the engineering part of the Geological Department of Chongqing University, Northwest University and Nanjing University, some cadres and teachers from Beijing Institute of Geology and Northeast Institute of geology were selected to form the University. After the establishment of the school, the former Department of petroleum, the second department and the third Department of Beijing Institute of Geosciences moved in as a whole. In 1958, it was renamed Chengdu Institute of geology. In 1960, it began to recruit postgraduates. In 1981, it became one of the first batch of master's degree awarding units in China. In 1984, it was granted the right to confer doctor's degree. In 1993, it was renamed Chengdu Institute of technology. In 2001, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of Chengdu University of Technology (merging Sichuan College of Commerce and nonferrous metal geological workers University). The school was directly under the Ministry of geology, Ministry of Geology and mineral resources and Ministry of land and resources, and transferred to Sichuan Province in 2000.As of March 2019, the school covers an area of 2887 mu, with a construction area of 970000 square meters. There are 17 teaching colleges and 2 research institutes. There are 3396 teaching staff. There are 36353 full-time students, including 30540 undergraduates and 5194 postgraduates.
