Zhengzhou University of light Industry, located in Zhengzhou City, the capital of Henan Province, is a key university with characteristics of Henan Province, which is jointly built by the central government and the local government and is mainly managed by the local government. It is also a University jointly built by the people's Government of Henan Province and the State Tobacco Monopoly Bureau. The doctoral degree of Henan Province is awarded to the key project construction unit. In 1998, it was transferred to the people's Government of Henan Province, and was granted the right to confer master's degree in the same year. In 2009, it was listed as a doctoral degree conferring unit in Henan Province to establish a university. In 2011, it became a University jointly built by the people's Government of Henan Province and the State Tobacco Monopoly Bureau. In 2018, it was determined as a doctoral degree conferring unit in Henan Province In December of the same year, it was renamed as Zhengzhou University of light industry; in February 2020, it was listed as the characteristic backbone University of Henan Province.
