In 1963, it was established independently as the Nanjing Institute of meteorology, listed as a national key university in 1978, and renamed Nanjing University of Information Engineering in 2004. Since 2007, Jiangsu Provincial People's government, China Meteorological Administration, Ministry of education and State Oceanic Administration have jointly built the project. At present, it is a University jointly built by the central and local governments with the management of Jiangsu Province as the main body.
